Game Overview

Star Trek: The Next Generation - Future's Past came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, published by Spectrum HoloByte. It was one of the few attempts to bring a proper Star Trek adventure to the 16-bit console, arriving in an era dominated by platformers and RPGs. The game tries to capture the feel of the show by putting you in command of the Enterprise and its crew, a decently ambitious goal for the hardware at the time.

You primarily control Captain Picard, issuing commands from the bridge during ship combat, which involves managing power to shields, weapons, and engines while scanning for enemy vessels. On the ground, you lead an away team of three officers through side-scrolling environments, switching between characters like Data, Worf, and Dr. Crusher to use their unique abilities to solve puzzles and fight. The main objective is to stop a temporal incursion, which involves investigating planets, gathering clues, and engaging in both space and ground combat. The pacing is slow and deliberate, with a noticeable difficulty spike in some of the tactical space encounters. It feels like a slightly clunky but earnest effort to simulate the command experience of the TV series.
