StarFox Command came out on the Nintendo DS in 2006, developed and published by Nintendo. It was part of that experimental phase on the DS where a lot of games really tried to integrate the touchscreen in meaningful ways, and this one was no exception. It felt like a natural, if somewhat unconventional, next step for the series on a handheld.

You control Fox McCloud's Arwing through various sectors, but the big twist is planning your movement on the map screen between encounters. You draw flight paths with the stylus to intercept enemies or avoid threats, then jump into real-time combat where you blast enemy ships, perform barrel rolls, and use smart bombs. The strategy layer adds a nice puzzle element to the usual shooting, and the branching story means your choices actually change how the game unfolds. It can get pretty frantic during battles, but nailing a perfect route or clearing a screen of hostiles is super satisfying. The whole thing just feels tactical and immediate in a way no other StarFox game really captures.
