Streets of Rage II came out on the Sega Master System in 1993, published by Sega. It was one of the later releases for the system, a time when the 16-bit Genesis was already dominating. This version was a scaled down but still ambitious attempt to bring the arcade style brawler home.
You control one of two characters, Axel or Max, as you fight through waves of thugs across a city taken over by a criminal syndicate. Your goal is to reach the end of each stage and defeat the boss waiting there. The gameplay involves moving screen by screen, punching and kicking enemies, and using special attacks that cost a bit of health. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can be punishing if you get surrounded. It feels immediate and physical, like you are really trading blows in those pixelated back alleys.
