Strikers 1945 came out in arcades in 1995, developed by Psikyo. It was part of that wave of mid-90s shooters that really pushed the limits of what you could do with pixel art and fast-paced action. You could find it in arcades alongside other vertical scrollers, but it had a look and feel all its own.
You control a World War II era fighter plane, shooting down waves of enemy aircraft and large mechanical bosses. The main goal is to survive each stage, rack up points, and see how far you can get before your credits run out. Two key mechanics stand out: each plane has a unique shot pattern and a screen-clearing bomb, and you can charge a more powerful shot by holding down the fire button. The pacing is relentless, with bullets filling the screen and demanding sharp reflexes. It feels tense and rewarding when you slip through a narrow gap or finally take down a stubborn boss.
