Stronghold was released for the Atari 2600 in 1980 by CommaVid, a lesser known developer from that era. It was one of those games that tried to push the hardware a little further, offering a more complex experience than many of the simpler arcade style titles common on the system at the time.

You control a small ship that must infiltrate and destroy an enemy base. The main objective is to fly through the base's defensive grid, shooting down shield generators to create openings, while avoiding enemy interceptors and return fire. Two key mechanics include navigating through narrow, maze like passages and timing your shots to disable shields just long enough to slip through. The pacing is tense; it starts methodically but quickly becomes frantic as more enemies appear and the base actively fights back. Playing Stronghold feels like a careful, high stakes battle of attrition where every move counts.
