Subhunt came out in 1987 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series, published by Interstel Corporation. It was one of those early PC titles that tried to do a lot with very little, using simple graphics and a focus on simulation to put you in the cramped, tense world of submarine warfare. For its time, it felt like a serious attempt at realism, even if the hardware limited how immersive it could really be.
You command a submarine, and your goal is to hunt enemy ships while avoiding destroyers that hunt you in return. The game plays out across different screens: a sonar display for tracking contacts, a periscope view for manual targeting, and a status panel managing your depth, speed, and torpedo supply. Pacing is slow and deliberate, with long stretches of silent waiting punctuated by moments of frantic evasion or careful aim. It feels like a high stakes game of cat and mouse where every decision carries weight.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
