Super Air Diver is one of those SNES games that tricks you into thinking you're a fighter pilot for about 20 minutes—until you crash into the ocean for the fifth time. The controls take some getting used to (turns out jets don't handle like Mario), but once you get the hang of banking and locking onto targets, there's something weirdly satisfying about blipping around on radar and lining up missile shots.
It's not full-on flight sim territory, but you'll actually need to manage speed and altitude instead of just holding down the fire button. The missions mix dogfights with bombing runs, and the difficulty curve feels fair—except for that one escort mission that still gives me nightmares. Graphics are solid 16-bit, with little details like contrails and explosions that hold up better than you'd expect.
If you ever played After Burner and wished it had more depth, this is basically that dream realized on the SNES.
