Game Overview

Super Black Onyx is a Japan only release for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Bullet Proof Software. It arrived late in the NES lifecycle, a time when many players were already looking toward the next generation of consoles, offering a particular kind of methodical dungeon crawl for those still invested in the system.

You control a lone adventurer whose primary goal is to delve deep into a multi level subterranean labyrinth to find the legendary Black Onyx. Exploration happens screen by screen in a first person perspective, with movement restricted to ninety degree turns and steps forward or backward. Combat is a turn based affair against monsters that appear randomly; you choose to attack, cast a spell, use an item, or attempt to flee. The pacing is deliberate and often slow, with a high difficulty stemming from limited resources and the need to carefully manage your health and magic points between trips back to the surface to recover and sell loot. It feels like a meticulous, almost archaeological process of uncovering a dangerous place one cautious step at a time.
