Super Monkey Ball: Touch & Roll came out for the Nintendo DS in 2005, a Sega release that fit right in with the early experimental phase of the handheld. You control a monkey encased in a transparent ball, navigating it through a series of floating, often precarious, courses. The main goal is simply to reach the goal gate at the end of each stage without falling off the edge. The signature mechanics are the dual control options: you can either tilt the entire DS system to physically roll the ball, or use the stylus on the touch screen to draw paths and guide your monkey. The pacing is frantic; one wrong move sends your character plummeting into the abyss, and the later stages demand serious precision. It feels like a constant, delightful battle against gravity and your own shaky hands.
