Super R-Type was one of those SNES launch titles that looked amazing at the time—bright colors, smooth scrolling, and those classic R-Type ship designs. It’s basically a port of the arcade version, but man, those first few levels feel brutal compared to later shooters. You’ve got the usual charge shots and force pods, but the screen gets so crowded with bullets and weird alien enemies that you’ll be replaying sections just to memorize the patterns.
Fun detail: the music has this weird, almost eerie vibe that somehow fits perfectly when you’re dodging giant biomechanical bosses. I still remember the first time I got to the stage 3 mid-boss and panicked because I had no idea where to shoot it. Classic Irem difficulty—prepare to die a lot.
