Super Sangokushi II is one of those deep SNES strategy games that looks simple at first—just a map of China with little armies moving around—but then suddenly it's 2 AM and you're still trying to outmaneuver Cao Cao's cavalry. You pick a warlord (or make your own, which is fun but way harder than you'd think) and start scrambling to recruit officers, manage food supplies, and deal with alliances that always seem to backfire at the worst moment.
The battles are this weird mix of rock-paper-scissors tactics and actual troop movements—archers wreck cavalry, spearmen stop infantry, but if you mess up the timing, your whole frontline collapses. I lost my first three campaigns because I kept forgetting to check the damn loyalty ratings of my generals. Classic Three Kingdoms drama, but with that satisfying SNES-era crunch.
If you like historical strategy games that don’t hold your hand, this one’s a hidden gem. Just don’t trust Liu Bei—guy always stabs you in the back.
