The early game is all about securing nearby cities and not getting stomped by bigger factions while you're still weak. I remember picking some minor warlord my first time and immediately getting steamrolled by Cao Cao's forces—lesson learned. The battles are simple but satisfying, with terrain and unit types actually mattering more than you'd expect from an SNES game.
