Super Shadow of the Beast on SNES is one of those brutal, atmospheric platformers that feels like it’s actively trying to kill you—in a good way. You play as Aarbron, a dude who got kidnapped as a kid and twisted into this monstrous warrior-slave for some evil beast lord. Not exactly a happy backstory.
The first thing you’ll notice is how weirdly beautiful the backgrounds are—lurid colors, twisted trees, all that Psygnosis surrealism. Then you’ll probably die immediately because the controls take some getting used to. Jumping feels heavy, combat’s stiff but deliberate, and enemies come at you from everywhere. It’s unforgiving, but when you finally clear a screen after like 20 tries, it’s weirdly satisfying.
Honestly, half the fun is just seeing what nightmare landscape they throw at you next. One minute you’re in a swamp full of eyeball monsters, next you’re climbing some gothic tower while harpies divebomb you. Just don’t expect a chill time—this game earns its reputation.
