Super Shadow of the Beast was planned for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System but never officially released. It was intended to be a port of the Amiga and Sega Genesis titles, developed by Reflections and published by Psygnosis. This game would have existed alongside other atmospheric action platformers of the early 90s, known for their detailed, moody visuals and challenging gameplay.
You control a beast-like warrior on a quest for vengeance through a series of interconnected, side scrolling environments. The main objective is to navigate these hostile lands, battling monstrous enemies using a combination of sword strikes and careful jumps. Signature mechanics include screen by screen exploration with occasional branching paths, and combat that requires precise timing to avoid enemy projectiles and counterattack. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty is notoriously high, demanding patience and memorization of enemy patterns. It feels like a grim, solitary struggle against a world designed to overwhelm you.
