Sword Master came out for the NES in 1992, developed and published by Athena. It was one of those later releases that tried to squeeze a bit more action out of the aging hardware, offering a side-scrolling adventure that felt familiar but had its own quirks. You play as a warrior tasked with rescuing a woman held captive in a monster-filled castle, a straightforward setup that gets you right into the action.
You control your character through interconnected screens, slashing with your sword, blocking attacks with a shield, and even transforming into a wizard to cast spells when you collect the right power-ups. The main goal is to fight through each area, defeat the bosses, and gather the pieces of a mystical crest to progress. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially with some tricky enemy placements. It feels like a solid, hands-on challenge where every mistake costs you.
