Alright, so Sword Master on the NES is one of those classic side-scrollers where you play as a knight charging through forests, creepy towns, and a villain's castle to rescue some poor kidnapped lady. The usual setup, right? But here's the thing—it's got this weirdly satisfying combat loop. You're mostly slashing with your sword and blocking with your shield, but then you stumble on these power-ups that completely change how you play. One minute you're a knight, the next you're hurling fireballs like some kind of wizard. Feels a bit OP until you run into those skeleton warriors or gargoyles that just don't care about your fancy magic.
The levels scroll with that old-school parallax effect, which honestly still looks cool. First time I played, I got wrecked by giant bats in the forest because I didn't realize how slow your shield raise is. Pro tip: don't get greedy with attacks. Later levels throw evil knights and lizard men at you, and they hit hard. It's not the deepest game, but there's something about the janky, weighty combat that makes clearing a screen of enemies weirdly rewarding.
