Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon came out for the Game Boy Color in 2000, developed by Wolf Team and published by Namco. It was a time when handhelds were really starting to offer deeper, console-like adventures, and this one fit right in as a spin-off from the popular Tales series.
You choose one of three starting characters, a chef, a mage, or a fighter, and guide them through a series of randomly generated dungeons. Your goal is to survive each floor, gather better gear, and eventually uncover the story behind the mysterious tower. Combat is real-time; you attack with your equipped weapon, be it a sword, a staff, or even a comical frying pan, while managing limited inventory and hunger. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can spike without warning, especially when your food runs low. It feels like a compact, unpredictable challenge every time you hit a new floor.
