Game Overview

Tales of Phantasia: Narikiri Dungeon is one of those weird little GBC games that somehow turns dungeon crawling into something cozy. You start by picking a class—swordfighter, mage, or chef (because why not?)—and then it just throws you into these compact, randomly generated dungeons. At first, I thought the chef thing was a joke, but turns out whipping up recovery items mid-battle is weirdly satisfying.

The pixel art has that classic Tales charm, and the combat feels like a stripped-down version of the series' usual side-scrolling brawls. It’s simple, but there’s something addictive about pushing deeper, especially when you recognize spells and items from the main games. The music’s got that crunchy GBC sound too—nostalgic in the best way.

It’s not as deep as a full Tales RPG, but for short bursts? Perfect. I’ve lost more than a few bus rides to the “just one more floor” loop. If you’ve got a soft spot for old-school dungeon crawlers with personality, this one’s worth digging up.
