Dodging wolf packs while chaining artes in tight DS battles—feels like a scrappy little Tales adventure that got lost in translation. Caius’ grumpy charm almost makes up for those claustrophobic dungeons.

Game Overview

Tales of the Tempest came out for the Nintendo DS in 2006, developed by Namco. It was part of that early wave of DS RPGs, a time when developers were still figuring out how to best use the dual screens and touch controls. This one always felt like a smaller, more experimental entry in the series, something you'd play between the bigger console releases.

You control Caius Qualls, a young man with a beastly alter ego, leading a small party through towns, fields, and multi-level dungeons. The main goal involves unraveling a mystery tied to your own cursed bloodline and the ancient history of your world. Combat happens on the bottom screen using a real-time action system where you chain basic attacks and special artes; it can get frantic when surrounded. Exploration is straightforward, moving screen by screen, and the pacing is brisk, though some dungeons feel a bit repetitive. The difficulty isn't too punishing, but it asks for your attention during boss fights. It feels like a compact, sometimes rough, but earnest handheld adventure.
