Game Overview

Tales of VS. came out on the PlayStation Portable in 2009, developed and published by Bandai Namco. It was a fun little distraction during the PSP era, a time when portable fighters and crossover games had a certain charm, even if they weren't always the deepest experiences.

You control a single character from the Tales series roster in one-on-one battles across small, enclosed arenas. The main objective is to defeat your opponent by chaining together basic attacks and special artes, building up a meter to unleash powerful mystic artes. The combat is fast and chaotic, focused on stringing together combos while characters loudly call out their moves. It's not particularly balanced or deep, but the speed and flash of pulling off a big combo make it satisfying in short bursts. The whole thing feels like playing through a particularly energetic anime fight scene.
