Game Overview

Ever played one of those NES games that feels like it shouldn’t exist on the system? Tantei Jinguuji Saburou is exactly that—a full-blown detective drama crammed into a cartridge. You’re Saburou, a chain-smoking PI in 80s Yokohama, and the whole thing plays out like a pixelated noir flick. The first time I booted it up, I thought I’d just be clicking through text, but then I got stuck for 20 minutes because I forgot to check a trash can for clues. Classic.

What’s wild is how much atmosphere they squeezed in—rain-slicked streets, shady bars, dialogue that actually makes you pause and think. It’s got that Snatcher vibe but with way more cigarettes and existential sighs. Fair warning: your Japanese better be decent, or you’ll miss half the nuance (and probably accuse the wrong guy). The murders get messy, the suspects lie constantly, and yeah, you might reload a save or two after realizing you screwed up three conversations ago. Still, stumbling through the mystery’s half the fun.

If you’ve got the patience for old-school adventure games, this one’s a time capsule worth dusting off.
