Game Overview

Tenjin Oyasen: Mercenary Force came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by KID and published by Irem. It was part of that wave of early handheld games trying to fit deeper, tactical experiences onto the small screen, a time when every cartridge felt like its own little world. You don't see many people talk about it now, but it had a certain rough charm that stood out.

You control a small team of mercenaries, moving them one by one across grid-based maps littered with destructible cover. Your main goal is to eliminate all enemy units on each screen, but ammunition is extremely limited, forcing you to scavenge dropped weapons and plan each shot carefully. The combat is turn-based and methodical; positioning is everything, and a single mistake can get a valuable soldier killed for good. It feels tense and deliberate, a constant battle of attrition where every decision carries weight.
