Game Overview
Test Drive Unlimited on the PSP, released in 2006 by Eden Games and Atari, was one of the few open world driving games on the handheld. It arrived during a time when portable systems were just beginning to explore large, explorable environments, and it stood out for its ambition on the small screen.
You control a driver who arrives on the island of Oahu with the goal of building a car collection and reputation. You explore the entire island freely, taking on races, completing delivery missions, or simply cruising. Signature mechanics include purchasing and customizing a wide range of licensed cars, and using an in-game GPS and map to navigate to events scattered across the roads. The pacing is largely self-directed, letting you choose between structured events and aimless driving; the difficulty varies considerably depending on the car you use and the type of race you enter. It feels liberating to have a whole island in your pocket, ready for a drive whenever you want.
