I picked up The Bard's Tale when it was re-released as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games series in 2004, a version handled by InXile Entertainment. It's a game that feels very much of its time, a foundational piece of the computer RPG genre from the mid-80s that you could now run on a more modern system without fuss. It doesn't try to hide its age, and that's part of its straightforward charm.

You control a party of up to six characters, creating them from a selection of classes like fighters, mages, and the titular bard, then guiding them through the cursed city of Skara Brae. Your main goal is to find and defeat the evil wizard Mangar, who has trapped the town in an eternal winter. The gameplay is methodical, built on first-person, grid-based exploration of the city streets and multi-level dungeons, turn-based combat against a bestiary of fantasy creatures, and the constant need to manage your party's resources, like spells and health. The bard's unique ability to sing songs that provide various buffs during combat becomes a crucial, often lifesaving, tactical layer. The difficulty is unapologetic, demanding careful mapping on graph paper and strategic retreats to temples for healing. Playing it feels like slowly and meticulously solving a dangerous, living puzzle.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
