Bilbo fumbles his way through Middle-earth—sneaking past trolls, chucking rocks at spiders, and wrestling with janky climbing mechanics. Smaug’s tiny but still gives you that "maybe I should’ve stayed home" vibe.

Game Overview

The Hobbit (E)(Menace) came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2003, developed by Saffire and published by Vivendi Universal Games. It was part of that wave of licensed action-adventure titles that tried to capture the feel of a big story on a small screen, back when handhelds were really hitting their stride.

You control Bilbo Baggins, moving screen by screen through locations from the book, like the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood. The main goal is to help the dwarves reclaim their homeland from the dragon Smaug, which involves a lot of exploration, light puzzle solving, and combat using a short sword. You also collect items and use context-sensitive actions, like throwing stones to distract enemies or trigger switches. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow, and the controls can feel a bit stiff, especially during platforming sections. It feels like a condensed, hands-on trip through the story, with all the fumbling and tension you might expect from a hobbit out of his depth.
