I picked up The Hobbit for Game Boy Advance back in 2003, a time when handhelds were really hitting their stride with deeper adventures. It was published by Sierra and Vivendi, and it felt like a solid attempt to bring Tolkien's world into a portable format. You don't see many licensed games from that era that tried to be more than just quick cash-ins, and this one had some ambition.
You control Bilbo Baggins, moving screen by screen through locations like the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood. The main goal is to help the dwarves reclaim their homeland from Smaug, which involves a lot of exploration, light puzzle solving, and combat using your short sword. You also collect items and talk to characters to advance the story. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes a bit slow, and the platforming can be unforgiving. It feels like a thoughtful, if occasionally clunky, journey through a familiar story.
