Game Overview
Oh man, The Hobbit on MS-DOS—this one takes me back. You start off in Bilbo's cozy hobbit hole, and suddenly you're typing commands like "take key" or "whisper to Thorin" while pixelated goblins lurk in the shadows. The parser can be finicky (good luck figuring out whether it wants "open door" or "unlock door"), but when it clicks, it feels like magic.
What blew my mind back then? The NPCs just... do things without you. Leave Gandalf alone too long, and he might wander off to smoke pipeweed somewhere. The dwarves could get themselves kidnapped if you're not paying attention. It’s janky, sure—sometimes you’ll type something perfectly logical and Bilbo will just stand there like a confused loaf—but that unpredictability makes every playthrough feel like your own weird Middle-earth story.
Fair warning: Smaug’s still terrifying, even in 16 colors. You’ll want to save often unless you enjoy replaying the troll scene twelve times.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
