Game Overview
So The King of Fighters EX on GBA is basically a pocket-sized version of the classic SNK fighting action. You’ve got all the usual suspects—Kyo, Iori, Mai—but with that chunky pixel charm the Game Boy Advance does so well. The story’s your typical tournament setup (mysterious organizer, fighters with grudges, etc.), but who cares when the combos feel this good?
First thing you’ll notice is how smooth the animations are for a handheld game. Pulling off a desperation move with Terry’s Power Wave or watching Mai’s fans spin across the screen just hits different on a tiny screen. The roster’s smaller than the arcade versions, but they packed in enough characters to keep matches interesting. I spent way too long trying to unlock everyone.
It’s not perfect—some inputs can be a little finicky on the GBA’s d-pad—but for a portable KoF fix, it’s way better than it has any right to be. If you’ve got a soft spot for old-school fighters, this one’s a solid time-killer.
