Game Overview

I first played The Perfect General back in the early 90s, a 1991 release from Quantum Quality Productions for MS-DOS. It was part of that wave of thoughtful, turn-based strategy games that really made you feel like a commander, not just a player. It didn't rely on flashy graphics; it was all about the decisions you made on a grid of hexagons.

You control a full army, moving individual units like infantry, tanks, and artillery across varied terrain. Your main objective is to either capture the enemy headquarters or destroy all their forces. The signature mechanics involve careful positioning, using terrain for cover and elevation advantages, and managing supply lines to keep your units effective. The pacing is deliberate, almost slow, and the difficulty is punishing if you rush. It feels like a tense, methodical chess match where every move has weight and a single mistake can unravel your entire strategy.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
