Ocean Software released The Rocketeer for MS-DOS in 1991, a time when movie tie-in games were common and often unforgiving. It was a side-scrolling action game based on the film, and it fit right in with the era's platformers, offering a mix of shooting and exploration without much hand-holding.
You control Cliff Secord, the Rocketeer, navigating through levels filled with enemy soldiers, spies, and obstacles. Your main goal is to stop the villains from using your stolen jetpack technology. You fly with the jetpack, which has tricky momentum and limited fuel, forcing you to manage altitude and avoid crashing. Combat involves shooting enemies with a pistol or using the jetpack's flame in close quarters. The game is known for its high difficulty, especially in later stages with tight platforming and enemy swarms. It feels tense and demanding, rewarding careful movement over reckless speed.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
