Thoroughbred Breeder II is one of those weirdly engrossing SNES games you stumble into and suddenly lose three hours to. You start by picking bloodlines—some stats are obvious, but there are hidden traits that only show up after breeding. Mess around with training schedules, watch your foal grow, and then nervously enter your first race. The races themselves are simple sprite animations, but when your horse pulls ahead in the final stretch? Pure fist-pump material.
What really hooks you is how much the game doesn’t explain. You’ll breed two "perfect" horses and get a dud, or accidentally stumble into a champion from mediocre parents. There’s a rival breeder who somehow always has slightly better horses, which is infuriating in the best way. The menus are all in Japanese, but after a few races, you’ll recognize the important kanji. It’s janky, unpredictable, and weirdly satisfying when your long-shot colt finally wins the big one.
