Threshold came out for the Atari 2600 in 1982, developed by Data Age. It was one of those games that tried to do something a little different on the system, mixing space combat with a constant resource management pressure that set it apart from simpler shooters of the time.

You pilot a small ship at the bottom of the screen, defending against waves of alien invaders. Your main objective is to survive as long as possible while managing two critical resources: your ship’s constantly depleting fuel and an overheating laser. You refuel by destroying entire enemy waves, but firing too rapidly causes your weapon to temporarily shut down. The pacing is tense; every shot matters, and you’re always watching your fuel gauge drop. It feels like a race against your own limits as much as against the enemies.
