Game Overview

Tiger Woods PGA Tour for the Nintendo DS came out in 2005 from Electronic Arts, a time when developers were still figuring out how to make the most of the system's dual screens and touch controls. It was one of the earlier sports titles on the platform, trying to translate a full console golf experience into something you could play with a stylus.

You control a custom golfer, working through tournaments and challenges to earn cash and better gear. The main objective is to shoot the lowest score possible on each course. The signature mechanic is the stylus-based swing; you make a practice gesture on the touch screen and then flick the stylus forward to hit the ball, with the speed and straightness of your motion determining the power and accuracy of the shot. You also use the touch screen to precisely aim your shots and putt, judging the green's slope by its visual grid. The pacing is deliberate, as you take your time to line up each shot, and the difficulty comes from reading the wind and managing your golfer's attributes. It feels surprisingly tactile and focused, a genuine attempt to make a complex sport work on a handheld.
