If you've ever wanted to feel like a whip-smart, dual-pistol-wielding archaeologist, Tomb Raider: Underworld on DS is your ticket. The controls take a minute to get used to—you'll be tapping the screen to climb ledges and swiping for melee attacks—but once it clicks, Lara moves surprisingly well for a handheld version.
Most of the game has you scrambling through crumbling ruins, solving lever-and-pressure-plate puzzles that make you feel clever when you finally figure them out (though I got stuck on one for way too long before realizing I needed to shoot a chain). The combat's a bit clunky, but there's something satisfying about dodging jaguar attacks in a Mayan temple between artifact hunts.
It's not as pretty as the console versions, but the atmosphere still nails that mix of danger and discovery. Just watch out for those instant-death spike traps—they got me more times than I'd like to admit.
