Game Overview

Tony Meola's Sidekicks Soccer is one of those SNES sports games that somehow feels both janky and weirdly charming. The Mode 7 graphics give it this pseudo-3D look where the field tilts as you move—kinda cool for the time, though the players still look like little pixelated ants. You’ve got all the basics: bicycle kicks, slide tackles, and the occasional accidental own goal when you button-mash too hard.

Picking a team is half the fun—64 options, from World Cup-style squads to random city teams (why is Milwaukee here?). Some play ultra-defensive, others just sprint forward like maniacs. Took me a few matches to realize the passing is way more effective than trying to dribble past everyone. And yeah, the commentary is hilariously repetitive, but that’s part of the nostalgia at this point.

It’s not the smoothest soccer sim, but there’s something oddly satisfying about the way the ball physics work. Just don’t expect FIFA-level realism.
