Play Total Carnage (USA, Europe) Online
You start with a pea shooter, but soon you’re dodging bullets and roasting enemies with a flamethrower while the screen fills with absolute madness. It’s the kind of chaos where you barely survive by pure reflex—then immediately die and do it all again.

Total Carnage came out on the Game Boy in 1994, developed by Beam Software and published by Malibu Games. It was part of that wave of portable action games trying to capture the feel of arcade shooters, but on a much smaller screen. You could tell it was aiming for something bigger, even with the hardware's limitations.
You control a lone commando fighting through screen after screen of enemy soldiers and vehicles. The goal is straightforward: survive, shoot everything, and move forward. The game uses a top-down perspective, and you clear one area at a time before advancing. You collect power-ups to switch weapons, from a basic machine gun to a spread shot or flamethrower, which helps when the screen gets crowded. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is high; you die quickly and often, restarting frequently to memorize patterns. It feels frantic and demanding, pushing you to react faster each time you play.
