Play Total Carnage Online
Pick Carnage or Mayhem, then blast through mutant hordes in cramped, bullet-riddled levels—until you find the flamethrower and things get properly messy. That diagonal strafing somehow works better than it should.

Total Carnage came out for the Game Boy in 1994, developed by Beam Software. It was a time when portable games often tried to capture the feel of bigger arcade or console titles, and this one was no exception. You got a pocket-sized version of that top-down run and gun chaos, scaled down but still frantic.
You control either Major Mayhem or Captain Carnage, moving through a series of tight, screen-by-screen battle zones. Your main goal is to survive waves of enemies, find keys to unlock exits, and occasionally rescue prisoners. The signature mechanics include diagonal strafing, which lets you fire in eight directions, and collecting a range of weapons like shotguns and flamethrowers that drastically change your approach. The pacing is relentless; enemies spawn constantly, and the small screen means you're always in close quarters. It feels like a constant scramble for ammo and breathing room, and pulling off a clean run without getting cornered is a genuine rush.
