Game Overview

U.N. Squadron on SNES is one of those shooters that sticks with you—partly because of how hard it kicks your butt at first. You start off picking from three mercenary pilots (I always went with Shin because his plane felt the most balanced), and then it’s straight into chaotic side-scrolling dogfights against waves of enemy jets, tanks, and screen-filling bosses. The controls are tight, but the game doesn’t hold your hand—you’ll be weaving through bullet hell while trying to line up shots on weak points.

What I love is the upgrade system. Between missions, you earn cash to beef up your plane’s weapons, armor, or speed, or even buy entirely new jets. The Phantom’s spread shot is great for crowds, but the A-10’s vulcan cannon shreds bosses if you can handle its sluggish turns. And the soundtrack? Pure 16-bit adrenaline, all crunchy guitars and pounding drums.

It’s got that classic SNES difficulty—expect to retry missions a few times—but nailing a perfect run feels incredible. The pixel art still holds up too, especially the explosions and crumbling enemy bases. If you’re into shooters with actual stakes (and not just mindless blasting), this one’s a blast.
