Game Overview

Man, Uncharted Waters on MS-DOS still holds up. You start by picking one of six captains—I always went with the Portuguese guy because his stats leaned into exploration, but the Dutch merchant is a solid choice if you just want to get rich quietly. The second you set sail, it hits you: this ocean is huge, and nobody’s going to tell you what to do next.

One minute you’re buying silk in Lisbon, the next you’re dodging pirates off the African coast or stumbling onto a hidden port that isn’t even on your map. The trading feels surprisingly deep—prices shift based on supply, and sometimes you’ll gamble on a cargo of spices only to find the market flooded when you arrive. Combat’s clunky by today’s standards, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about outmaneuvering a galleon with your tiny caravel.

What I love is how unpredictable it gets. You might spend an hour grinding trade routes, then suddenly get swept into a storm that wrecks half your fleet. Or discover a rumor about buried treasure that sends you halfway across the world. Later games polished the formula, but this one’s got that rough, open-ended charm where every victory feels like you pulled it off yourself. Still one of the best sandbox games from the DOS era.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
