Play Untima IX - Descension Online
Explore towns, chat with NPCs, battle monsters, solve puzzles, and save Britannia in this 1993 RPG where you control the Avatar and navigate a world of dimensional rifts.
Ultima IX: Descension came out in 1993 for MS-DOS, developed by Origin Systems. It was one of those ambitious late-era DOS RPGs that tried to push the hardware with its 3D environments, though it often felt a bit rough around the edges compared to some of its contemporaries. You could tell they were reaching for something grand, even if the technology wasn't quite ready to keep up smoothly.
You control the Avatar, tasked with saving Britannia from a series of dimensional rifts and moral decay. The game involves exploring towns and wilderness, conversing with NPCs to uncover clues, and delving into dungeons filled with monsters and traps. Combat is real-time, using swords, spells, or a bow, and you'll spend a lot of time managing inventory and solving environmental puzzles. The pacing is slow, partly due to technical hiccups and sometimes confusing level design, but there's a strange appeal in its earnest, if flawed, execution. It feels like exploring a world that's barely holding itself together, both in the story and in how it runs on your machine.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
