Urthwurm came out in 1995 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, developed by Paul Jane. It was one of those late-era DOS titles that relied on simple mechanics and a clear, punishing goal, fitting right in with the platformers and arcade-style challenges that were common at the time.
You control a small drill-tank, burrowing through maze-like dirt tunnels one screen at a time while a massive pixelated worm chases you relentlessly. The objective is to navigate each stage without getting caught, using careful path planning and quick reactions to avoid dead ends. Key mechanics include screen-by-screen exploration, managing your limited drill fuel, and outmaneuvering the worm which follows your exact path. The pacing is tense and the difficulty is high, with mistakes often leading to instant failure. It feels like a desperate, claustrophobic race against time where every successful escape brings a sharp sense of relief.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
