Vanguard came out for the Atari 2600 in 1982, published by Atari themselves. It was a port of an arcade game, which was pretty common back then. You got a lot of these side scrolling shooters on the system, and this one stood out for its structure and the way it handled movement and firing.

You pilot a small ship through four distinct zones, each with its own layout and enemy types. Your main goal is to survive from one end of the level to the other, destroying enemy crafts and dodging obstacles. The ship slows down noticeably whenever you fire your weapon, which forces you to choose between offense and speed. You can also collect "E" pods to replenish your energy, adding a small layer of resource management. The game moves at a steady pace, but the difficulty ramps up quickly as you progress. It feels tense and deliberate, requiring careful timing rather than just frantic shooting.
