Atari released Video Checkers for the 2600 in 1978, a straightforward adaptation of the board game designed for one or two players. It was one of the earlier titles for the system, arriving when many games were still simple translations of familiar physical games into digital form. The screen shows a basic red and black checkerboard with chunky, blocky pieces that slide into place with a faint electronic sound.

You control your checkers, moving them diagonally forward one space at a time or jumping over your opponent's pieces to capture them. The main goal is to capture all of the other player's checkers or block them from moving. Key mechanics include kinging your pieces (they gain the ability to move backward once they reach the far row) and the option to play a variant where the objective is to lose all your own pieces first. The computer opponent offers several difficulty levels, and on the higher settings it can be quite challenging, planning several moves ahead.
