Warlock came out on the Sega Genesis in 1994, published by Acclaim Entertainment. It was part of that wave of games trying to push the hardware with big, flashy effects and a darker fantasy style. You don't see many games that try to mix fighting game moves with an adventure structure, but that's exactly what this one did.
You control a powerful mage, either the hero or his evil counterpart, and you travel screen by screen through a world map fighting monsters and searching for pieces of a magical staff. The combat is the main draw; you have a basic sword, but the real fun is in the spells. You input special move commands, like in a fighting game, to unleash screen-filling tornados, summon dragons, or call down meteors. The game is fast and surprisingly difficult, with enemies that swarm you and bosses that demand quick reflexes. It feels chaotic and explosive, like you're barely containing the magic you're throwing around.
