Wasteland came out in 1988 from Interplay Productions, a text-heavy RPG for MS-DOS that felt right at home among the serious, keyboard-driven games of the era. It didn't rely on flashy graphics; instead, it built its world through paragraphs of descriptive text and tactical, turn-based choices that demanded your full attention.
You control a squad of Desert Rangers, customizing their skills and equipment as you explore a post-nuclear American Southwest screen by screen. Your main goal is to uncover a conspiracy threatening the few remaining settlements, which involves negotiating with factions, scavenging supplies, and engaging in tactical combat where positioning and weapon choice matter. The game is unapologetically difficult, with permanent death for your characters and puzzles that require careful note-taking. Playing Wasteland feels like guiding a fragile group of survivors through a world that has absolutely no interest in cutting you a break.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
