Welltris came out in 1989 for arcades, designed by Alexey Pajitnov, the creator of Tetris. It was published by Spectrum HoloByte, and it took the falling block formula into a new dimension. This was during a time when arcade cabinets were still dominant, and puzzle games were experimenting with fresh perspectives beyond flat grids.
You control falling shapes made of blocks, but instead of a flat playing field, you drop them into a three dimensional well viewed from above. The main goal is to complete solid horizontal layers to clear them and prevent the well from filling up. Key mechanics include rotating the entire well to see all four sides, choosing which face to drop pieces from, and planning drops so blocks settle into gaps below. The pace is deliberate but demanding, requiring spatial awareness and forward thinking. It feels like solving a structural puzzle under quiet pressure.
