Battle through a dark fortress, slashing enemies with swords and axes, exploring maze-like levels, and collecting power-ups to survive the relentless onslaught in Witchaven.
Witchaven came out in 1995 for MS-DOS, developed by Capstone Software. It was part of that wave of first-person action games that tried to capture the feel of dungeon crawlers with a more aggressive, real-time combat focus. It fit right in with the era's push for more immersive, albeit often technically limited, 3D environments.
You control a knight tasked with cleansing a fortress overrun by dark magic. The main goal is to fight your way through interconnected levels, defeating monsters and finding keys to progress. Signature mechanics include screen-by-screen exploration in a maze-like structure, direct melee combat with a variety of swords and axes, and the collection of power-ups to increase your health and weapon strength. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with enemies often swarming from tight corridors. It feels like a desperate, close-quarters brawl where every corner turned could be your last.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
