Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed and published by Sir-Tech. It was part of that wave of deep, complex RPGs that really tested your patience and your note-taking skills, a time when games didn't hold your hand and expected you to figure things out for yourself.
You control a custom party of up to six adventurers, delving into a massive, multi-level dungeon to retrieve the stolen Heart of the Maelstrom. The game is played screen by screen, with first-person exploration and turn-based combat that requires careful positioning of your fighters and spellcasters. The pacing is deliberately slow and the difficulty is notoriously unforgiving; a single wrong turn or unprepared encounter can mean a total party wipe. It feels like a genuine, hard-won accomplishment every time you survive another level and make it back to the surface to heal.
