Game Overview

World Soccer GB2 is one of those Game Boy Color soccer games that just feels right in your hands. No fancy menus, no drawn-out tutorials—just pick a team (Japan’s got some surprisingly solid options) and dive straight into a match. The controls are simple—pass, shoot, sprint—but the AI actually puts up a decent fight, especially if you crank up the difficulty.

It’s not trying to be FIFA, and that’s the charm. The pixelated players move fast, tackles are satisfyingly chunky, and matches wrap up quick enough that you can squeeze one in between bus stops. I kept coming back to the tournament mode, tweaking my lineup between games like some kind of tiny, monochrome football manager.

If you’ve got a soft spot for Japan-only retro games or just miss when soccer titles were more arcade than simulation, this one’s a solid play. Bonus points if you dig out an actual GBC to run it on.
