Game Overview

World Trophy Soccer (or European Club Soccer, depending on where you played it) was one of those early '90s Sega Genesis football games that tried to split the difference between arcade action and something slightly more tactical. The camera pulls back farther than in other soccer titles of the era, so you actually get a decent view of the field—no guessing where your midfielders wandered off to.

It’s got all the big European clubs from back then, though don’t expect real player names or perfect kits. The ref actually runs around on the pitch, which felt weirdly advanced at the time, and there are these little cutscenes for goals and fouls that give it some personality. You can go full arcade mode or tweak tactics with six formations, though let’s be honest—most of us just picked 4-4-2 and hoped for the best.

It’s definitely of its era, but there’s a charm to how it balances simplicity with just enough depth to keep you from button-mashing the whole match.
