Game Overview

Wrestlemania Challenge came out for the NES in 1990, developed by Rare and published by LJN. It was one of several wrestling games on the system, arriving when sports titles were becoming more common but still often rough around the edges. The game features a roster of WWF stars from that era, including Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage, letting players step into the ring in either single matches or tag team bouts.

You control a wrestler from a side view, moving around the ring and using a basic set of grapples, strikes, and slams to wear down your opponent. The main goal is to pin them for a three count or force a submission. Signature mechanics include building up a special meter by performing moves; once full, it lets you execute a more powerful signature attack. Matches are slow and methodical, with awkward collision detection that sometimes makes it hard to land moves consistently. It feels like a clumsy but earnest attempt to capture the spectacle of pro wrestling on the NES.
